Foot Care For Walkers

May 03, 2023

With not long to go to the JLF trek, I'm getting much more serious about my feet. I often get asked about the best way to look after feet when people have pain, such as plantar fasciitis (soreness on the soles of your feet). However, if you're planning on longer treks foot care is super important too. In the past, people have given me some pretty "interesting" advice about foot care. This has included rubbing varying things on the soles including isopropyl alcohol, cocoa butter cream, and even olive oil! As a physio, I've probably seen more than my fair share of people who've slipped in the shower after rubbing creams on their sore feet, so I wouldn't recommend any of those oily things! Do you have a tip for foot care?

At the moment I've only found that the best foot preparation for walking is... Walking! So, I've been doing more distance again this week. Thankfully the shoes I've chosen have some good qualities: they're supportive, with a roomy toe-box, arch support and nice lacing that I've adjusted to avoid pressure points. Although I did get some debris stuck between my foot and shoe that ended up giving me a blister! I'm also trialling some socks. They're the cute ones with separated toes. My husband says I look like I have hobbit feet with them on lol! Do you have any favourite sock/shoe combos?

Lastly I'm also paying good attention to my toenails. They're not getting so much polish as a good trim and a little filing to reduce razor sharp edges that impacted an outing last week! If you have any top tips for feet, I'd love to hear them!
